Suns New Head Coach Revealed

The Suns just poached another assistant from the best team in the East!

Phoenix is hiring Jordan Ott from the 64-win Cleveland Cavaliers as their new head coach, and Devin Booker apparently stamped him as his top choice.

Ott beat out fellow Cavs assistant Johnnie Bryant after both met with ownership in Michigan this week. The 40-year-old has been grinding as an NBA assistant since 2012 and worked his way up through Atlanta, Brooklyn, the Lakers, and now Cleveland. He's known for being a strong communicator and studying game trends obsessively.

The Cavaliers had the league's best offense and 8th-best defense this season, so clearly their system works. Ott was one of Kenny Atkinson's first hires when he took over Cleveland, and now Phoenix is betting he can bring that same success to the desert.

The Suns went through a thorough search process, starting with 15+ candidates before narrowing it down to six finalists. After going 36-46 last season, this will be their fourth different coach in four years, which is absolutely wild.

Now comes the interesting part - they're apparently working with Kevin Durant on finding his "next landing spot," so it sounds like KD might be on the move again.

Knicks Fire Thibs 😮

Pulling the trigger too fast?

Thibs coached New York for five seasons and had a solid 226-174 record, plus got them to their first Eastern Conference Finals since 2000. Before he arrived, the Knicks hadn't made the playoffs in seven straight years - dude literally brought them back to relevance and made the playoffs in four of his five seasons.

The organization is basically saying "thanks for getting us competitive, but now we need a championship." Leon Rose straight up said they're "singularly focused on winning a championship," which is a pretty clear message that making the conference finals isn't enough anymore.

The playoffs definitely showed both their potential and their problems. They trailed in 12 of 18 playoff games but pulled off some incredible comebacks, including those two 20-point rallies against the defending champion Celtics. But that starting lineup with KAT and Mikal Bridges never really clicked - apparently it was the second-worst performing starter group among teams that played 100+ playoff minutes together.

It's a bold move firing a coach who just took you to the conference finals, but the Knicks clearly think they need someone else to get them over the hump.

New NBA All-Star Format 2026

The NBA is finally ditching the weird tournament format that nobody liked!

Commissioner Adam Silver just announced they're going with USA vs. the World for next year's All-Star Game, and honestly, this sounds way better.

This comes after this year's All-Star Game got roasted for its confusing tournament structure that fans absolutely hated. Silver's basically admitting they need to figure out a format that actually works and stick with it.

The timing is perfect too - the 2026 All-Star Game is happening right in the middle of the Winter Olympics in Italy. Silver said the game will be in the afternoon instead of evening, so it'll have Olympic events as the lead-in and more Olympics afterward. Smart programming move.

He's taking inspiration from the NHL's 4 Nations Face-Off, which was apparently a huge success. That tournament had Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the US competing over eight days, and Silver paid close attention to how well the national identity angle worked.

The game's at the new Intuit Dome in LA on February 16th, so it should be a pretty cool setup. No word yet on exactly how they'll structure the rosters or format, but anything's gotta be better than whatever that tournament thing was supposed to be.

Coco Gauff Moves On To Semifinals

After dropping the first set in a tiebreak (her first set loss of the tournament), Gauff bounced back to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 and punch her ticket to another semifinal.

This match was wild - both players were trading momentum like crazy. Gauff went down 4-1 in the first set, stormed back to take the lead, then lost the tiebreak 8-6. The second set was more of the same roller coaster, but this time Gauff managed to close it out 6-4. Then in the third set, she absolutely took over and dominated.

Keys had 60 unforced errors compared to Gauff's 41, and only 2 of those came in that decisive third set while Keys had 16. Gauff's serve was money when it mattered, winning 75% of first serve points.

Gauff's semifinal opponent is Lois Boisson, who's ranked 361st in the world but is having an absolutely magical run. The French player just beat No. 6 Mirra Andreeva and earlier took down No. 3 Jessica Pegula. She'll have the home crowd going nuts on Thursday.

This is Gauff's second straight French Open semifinal. Her best result here was runner-up to Iga Swiatek in 2022.

OKC vs. Indiana - Thank You Paul George?

This is such a wild NBA butterfly effect story!

Both Finals teams basically built their championship cores by trading away Paul George, and now PG is sitting at home watching them compete for a title.

The Pacers' path is crazy - they traded George to OKC in 2017 for Domantas Sabonis and Victor Oladipo. That duo was solid but never championship-level. Then when things fell apart, they flipped Sabonis to Sacramento for a package centered around Tyrese Haliburton. The Kings were willing to give up Haliburton because they thought De'Aaron Fox was their future and wanted a center. So basically, George → Sabonis → Haliburton, and now Haliburton is leading Indiana to the Finals.

OKC's story is even wilder. George re-signed with the Thunder after getting traded there, but then Kawhi Leonard told the Clippers "get me Paul George or I'm not coming." So the Clippers absolutely mortgaged their future, giving up Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, and FOUR first-round picks that became Tre Mann, Jalen Williams, Dillon Jones, and a 2025 pick swap.

Now that trade haul has the Thunder four wins away from a championship.

Meanwhile, PG's 76ers didn't even make the play-in tournament.
