2025 NBA Draft Recap: Mavericks Land Flagg, Big Trades Shake Up First Round

The 2025 NBA Draft kicked off with a bang, as expected, with the Dallas Mavericks selecting Duke's phenom forward Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 overall pick. Flagg, widely considered the most polished prospect in recent memory, joins a Mavericks squad looking to build for sustained success around their existing stars.

Beyond the top pick, the first round was a flurry of activity, featuring several surprising selections

  • The San Antonio Spurs continued to build their young core, drafting Rutgers guard Dylan Harper at No. 2.

  • Ace Bailey, a highly-touted wing from Rutgers, experienced a slight slide, landing with the Utah Jazz at No. 5. This was a notable moment, as Bailey had reportedly avoided pre-draft workouts with some teams.

  • One of the biggest surprises of the night came at No. 16, with the Portland Trail Blazers selecting 7-foot-2 Chinese center Yang Hansen, a player widely projected as a second-round pick. This came after a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Faith Kipyegon Breaks Her Own Mile World Record, Nears Elusive Sub-4 Mark

Kenyan superstar Faith Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion, made history on Thursday, June 26, 2025, in Paris by running the fastest mile ever recorded by a woman, clocking an astonishing 4 minutes, 06.42 seconds. This remarkable performance in a Nike-sponsored exhibition event, "Breaking4: Faith Kipyegon vs. the 4-Minute Mile," shattered her own previous world record of 4:07.64 set in 2023.

Despite the record-breaking time, Kipyegon fell short in her highly anticipated quest to become the first woman in history to run a mile in under four minutes. The event, supported by pacemakers (including men) and cutting-edge Nike innovations, was unofficial and thus her new best time will not be recognized by the international federation as an official world record. However, Kipyegon continues to push the boundaries of women's middle-distance running, and the athletics world eagerly anticipates her next pursuit of the sub-four-minute mile.

Austin Reaves Declines Lakers Max Extension, Eyes Bigger Payday in 2026

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves has reportedly declined a four-year, $89.2 million max contract extension offer from the team. This move, while significant, is not a sign of discontent but rather a strategic decision by Reaves to maximize his future earnings.

Reaves, 27, is currently entering the third year of his four-year, $54 million contract. By declining this extension, he positions himself to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2026, where he is expected to command a much larger contract than the Lakers were allowed to offer under current NBA rules. The extension offered was the maximum permissible, but due to salary cap rules, it was significantly less than what he could potentially earn on the open market.

Despite the decision, sources indicate that Reaves has a strong desire to remain with the Lakers for his entire career.

A’ja Wilson Makes WNBA History

Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson has cemented her place in WNBA history by becoming the fastest player to reach 5,000 career points. The three-time MVP achieved this remarkable milestone during the Aces' recent game against the Connecticut Sun. Wilson, in her seventh WNBA season. She achieved this feat in just 238 games, improving on the previous record set by Breanna Stewart (242 games).

Wilson's consistent dominance has been the driving force behind the Aces' recent success, including back-to-back WNBA championships. This latest achievement further highlights her dominance and her impact on the game.
