NC Bettors Fueling NC Athletics

North Carolina's sports betting scene is on absolute fire 🔥 but there's a plot twist in the tax department.

October saw NC bettors drop $612 million on their favorite games – making it the third-biggest month since betting kicked off in March. While bettors collected a cool $560 million in winnings, there's a catch.

Unlike federal law, NC doesn't let you balance your wins and losses come tax time. State Rep. Erin Pare aims to fix this headache with a new bill dropping in January. "It's fair and commonsense," says Pare, who, fun fact, has never placed a single bet herself.

The numbers are wild though. NC bettors have wagered over $4.1 billion since March, with real money bets (not those flashy promotional offers) hitting $3.7 billion. The state's been raking in the dough too, collecting $8.7 million in taxes just from October's action.

But the coolest part? Some of that betting money is actually helping college athletics. Public universities in the UNC system, outside of UNC and NC State, receive a portion of the tax money.

App State's planning to use $3.3 million for a new indoor football facility, while UNC-Pembroke's using their share to bounce back from COVID losses. Talk about a win-win.

Endeavor To Sell OpenBet, IMG Arena For $450M 💰

Endeavor is making some major moves.

The entertainment giant is selling off OpenBet and IMG Arena for $450 million to OB Global, a group led by none other than Hollywood power broker Ari Emanuel. Think of it as a strategic shuffle before Endeavor goes private in a massive $13 billion deal with Silver Lake.

OpenBet's CEO Jordan Levin is staying in the driver's seat, backing the deal alongside other executives. "This management buyout allows us to continue executing our vision," says Levin.

But here's where it gets interesting – Endeavor's keeping its options open with IMG Arena, still shopping it around to potential buyers. Not a bad move, considering IMG Arena streams over 65,000 live events across multiple sports.

The timing's crucial here – this deal needs to close just before Endeavor goes private, which is expected by early 2025.

NFL World Domination

The NFL's global takeover is getting even spicier in 2025.

Commissioner Roger Goodell just dropped some major news from Munich. There’s going to be as many as eight international games next season, and Ireland might finally get its shot at hosting some American football.

Spain's already locked in for its NFL debut at Madrid's Bernabéu Stadium. Mexico City's making a comeback after a two-year timeout. Brazil's getting another game after Philly and Green Bay's thriller in São Paulo. And Germany's still very much in the mix – with Berlin potentially joining the party.

The Irish connection? Calling all Terrible Towels. The Steelers have deep ties to the Emerald Isle (their former owner Dan Rooney was literally the U.S. Ambassador there), and Dublin's Aviva Stadium is ready for some NFL action after hosting college games for years.

If Ireland gets the green light, they'll become the sixth country – and fourth European nation – to join the NFL's international roster. NFL world domination is incoming.

Michigan's NIL game just got a serious upgrade with their latest power move.

The Wolverines are teaming up with "Passes," a platform that's about to change how fans support their favorite college athletes. Think of it as Michigan Athletics' own subscription service.

Now any fan can get in on supporting Michigan's 29 varsity sports. The new Michigan Content Hub will offer different subscription tiers, giving fans access to exclusive content, merch, and experiences.

The most intriguing part? The "Team 146 Tier" is specifically designed to help keep Michigan football in the national championship conversation through recruiting and retention. It's democratizing athletic support.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. Especially these NIL deals 🤑

Big money moves are happening in College Station. Texas A&M athletes raked in $19.4 million in NIL deals for the 2023-24 academic year. That's a massive jump from last year's $13.2 million haul. (Are ramen noodles not going to be a staple college food anymore...?)

What’s so special about the Aggies? Their athletes are nailing the perfect blend of athletic talent and marketability. NIL collectives and brand deals are turning college athletes into business moguls before they even graduate.

Want some perspective on just how much cash we're talking about? On3, the guru of NIL valuations, has the data on A&M's top earners.

  1. Wade Taylor

Taylor’s current NIL sits at a massive $1.4 million, nearly tripling this year. He’s on track to finish with the best career in Texas A&M history 🐐 Shattering 13 school records and on the verge of becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer.

  1. Nic Scourton

ESPN ranked Scourton as the 8th best college football player and he’s projected to be a first-round NFL draft pick. High expectations have skyrocketed Scourton’s NIL valuation to $797,000.

  1. Terry Bussey

Even though he’s just a freshman, Mr. Dual-threat Terry Bussey is getting valued at $403,000. The wide receiver has over 40,000 followers across his social media.

  1. Le’Veon Moss

Before his season-ending injury, Moss’s NIL valuation was at $256,000 as Texas A&M’s leading rusher. But injuries happen 😔 now his NIL valuation has declined to $215,000.

  1. Conner Weigman

At the start of the season, Weigman was projected as one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, which led to a crazy $628,000 NIL valuation. But injury issues and getting benched have led to a significant drop to about $200,000.
